Basic Punching Techniques

Place the punch on a sturdy table and stand over the punch. Using the heel of your hand, press the punch down firmly and slowly. We recommend using punches on cardstock or lighter weight paper. To properly align repeating border punch designs, use the punch upside down. To punch a small shape inside of a larger punched shape, punch the small shape first. Turn the large punch upside down and align the small shape inside the large punch. Be sure to punch using the heel of your hand. To punch a photo, simply turn the punch upside down, align your photo in the punch and depress the punch with the palm of your hand.

If a punch becomes jammed with the sheet of paper inside of it, place the punch with paper in a cool location for 10 to 20 minutes. The metal should contract, allowing the punch to release the paper without damaging the paper.

Punch Basics

Using Corner Punches

The single most important rule when using a corner punch is to have a perfectly square corner on your punching media. Also work with the corner punch upside down. With the corner guides out, it is helpful to draw guide lines on the back of the medium to help ensure proper alignment. Here is a simple, three-step method for creating the perfect corner punch:

  1. Seat the paper securely into the corner guides.
  2. Lock the paper in place by depressing the punch.
  3. Complete punching by using a steady motion.

Removing Corner Guides

With corner guides removed, corner and photo mounting punches have added versatility as borders or for matting round or oval photos. To remove corner guides, insert a small, flat-blade screwdriver into the middle of the paper slot where the two halves of the corner guide meet. Gently wiggle the screwdriver to the left a few times, then to the right. Repeat this action until the guides separate and can be slid apart. To reinstall, slide the side guide with the two locking pins back into the punch smooth, flat side up. Slide the other side guide in and squeeze together. They will lock in the correct location.

Using Single Design Motifs

As they often say, "less is more." You can create elegant project by limiting the number of different design shapes that you use. Whoever, this does not mean you have to limit your imagination!

Using Silhouette Punches

Stand over the punch placing the heel of your hand on the button and your hand facing the back end of the punch, away from the paper slot. As you gently depress the button, you will hear two clicks. The first is the die cutting the outline; the second is the interior die cut cutting the insets. The punching process is now complete.

Using Scrap Pieces

Finally, to conserve your paper, use your scraps instead of throwing them away! You can use scrap pieces of vellum to back your designs, create the look of stained glass, etc. You can also use punched pieces of foils, vellums, mulberries or fabric to create your own stickers. Use scrap pieces of any cardstock to create fun collage and paper-piecing designs.
